STORYLINE:

Fifty years ago Edmund Hillary and his expedition partner Tenzing Norgay became the first humans to stand on the world's highest peak, at a height of 8,850 meters (29,035 feet),

But Edmund Hillary left another lasting legacy in Nepal.

The Himalayan Trust that he subsequently set up has had a profound impact on the lives of the people living in the shadow of Mount Everest.

This school is one example.

Founded in 1963, facilities here are basic - teachers use an oxygen tank from the 1953 Everest expedition as a school bell, but the school's headmaster says education has transformed these children's lives.

Edmund Hillary's son Peter is in Nepal to raise funds for his father's charity, and visited the first school set up by the foundation.

Khumjung School was set up in 1961.

Its complex of buildings were donated by a Calcutta company and were airlifted to the mountain region by the Swiss Red Cross.

Peter Hillary told APTN he hoped it would serve as an example of how people who come to Nepal to climb, can give something back to the community.

In all the Himalayan Trust has provided 27 schools, 12 medical centres and two hospitals, including the Kunde hospital, for the region.

It has also funded the construction of roads and bridges and initiated a reforestation programme which nurtured, planted and protected 100,000 indigenous tree seedlings each year.

Still, 40 percent of Nepal's 23 (m) million people live in poverty, according to the World Bank.
