STORYLINE
Germany's chancellor late on Wednesday hosted a reception and informal dinner for the G8 leaders and their spouses.
Angela Merkel and her husband, Joachim Sauer, waited on the lawn of the golden Gut Hohen Luckow castle, near the seaside resort of Heiligendamm, to welcome their guests for their first get-together of the summit.
The G8 members are Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, the United States, Canada and Russia.
The European Commission is also represented at the summit.
