Controlled burns are an essential part of managing wildfire risk in the Banff area, and this footage captures a recently completed burn in the Two Jack Lakeside area. Smoke billows off the grass, as heat and flame sweep the land, slowly consuming and transforming everything in its path. We take a closer look at the burn and talk with Eddie Difalco, Wildfire Management Officer for Alberta Parks, who explains the purpose of controlled burns.

Controlled burns are key in managing wildfire risk and maintaining grazing land for Horses in the area. The “Fuel Management Approach” that Eddie outlines is designed to eventually get rid of the dense vegetation like grasses and trees, that could fuel a dangerous wildfire, and create a better balance of grazing land and forest.
