Section 489C of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) deals with the possession or use of counterfeit currency notes. According to this section, anyone who possesses or uses a counterfeit currency note, knowing or having reason to believe that it is counterfeit, shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to seven years and shall also be liable to a fine.

The section also states that if the offence under section 489C is committed by a person in relation to any forged or counterfeit currency note or banknote, the punishment shall be increased to imprisonment for a term which may extend to ten years and shall also be liable to a fine.

In simpler terms, Section 489C makes it illegal to possess or use counterfeit currency notes, and the punishment for such an offence can range from imprisonment for up to seven years, to imprisonment for up to ten years if the offence is committed in relation to forged or counterfeit currency notes or banknotes.

It's important to note that ignorance of the note being counterfeit is not a valid defence under this section. Therefore, it's essential to be cautious when handling currency notes and to verify their authenticity before accepting or using them.
