The IPM (Intelligent Power Module) is a high-performance (Set of IGBTs, smart control chip and protection circuit molded as a single component) module that mounts a dedicated drive circuit for drawing greater performance from an IGBT chip, and it provides a custom IC for executing self-protection functions (short circuit (over current), supply under voltage, and over temperature).
IPM have power switching component (usually set of IGBT), and the module is “intelligent” because it includes additional control and protection circuit. The basic goal is to increase performance.
its intelligent chip receives drive signals from microcomuter or microcontroller to drive the load, and built in temperature sensor and external current sense input is provided to make it quick and intelligent to protect the load and the power drive circuit , when the protection's feedback is within limit, then its chip provides the gate drives signals to the IGBT, wgich further switches the drive voltage. Gate-drive circuitry must apply the proper voltage and supply large amounts of current for fast switching.
Gate-drive logic can also be designed to prevent high-side and low-side IGBTs from conducting simultaneously. this protection is named : "shoot-through protection", cross-conduction prevention, or interlock circuitry.
Protection circuit detects and addresses over current, over temperature, short-circuit, and under voltage conditions.
