there are many different ways to manage day to day paperwork.

Rather than have an intray, I use a tickler system which effectively helps me manage my paperwork.

There are a few different variations of the system. For me, I have drop-down suspensions folders marked 1 to 31.

Paperwork is filed on the day it needs actioning and I use files to keep like minded papers together.

So for example, I have a folder for bills to pay and I pay bills on Mondays.

When a new bill comes in, a quick look on my calendar will show me when the next Monday falls and under what date my folder is currently housed. During the week, when I print out bills, I add it to the folder ready to pay.

I will also add notes for accounts I need to check on and for any bills where I don't physically need to print it. If I have tickets for an upcoming event, they get filed under the date of the event.

I have files for ongoing projects like marketing and clients. These get filed under the date that I will action it.

If the project does not get finished on that date, I look at my calendar to figure out when the next available time slot is and file the paperwork accordingly. This stops piles on my desk. This system only works if you are diligent on checking the current date daily.

If you are going to use this system, consider adding a reminder to check daily until it becomes a habit.

Some systems also have a monthly folder for anything happening in the future, this may work for you. This didn't work for me, instead I clearly mark the paper or folder and file it in the relevant date.

Anything I come across that is for a future month, gets returned to the dropdown.
