Societies have believed in the value of gold for thousands of years — including the ancient Eyptians, Greeks, and Romans as well as the Mayans, Aztecs, and Incas to name a few. That continues today. While currencies are no longer directly tied to the value of the precious metal (called the Gold Standard), governments and individuals across the globe continue to bet on its enduring mystique.

But why? Gold is shiny, it's malleable, and has a unique luster. It also has a track record of success, making it an attractive option for investors the world over. Some governments use it as a hedge against fiat currency and other investments...which may or may not be a good idea.
