World Hepatitis Day was on the 28th of July 2015, with a huge number of events taking place across the globe.

To raise awareness of the disease, in particular hepatitis C, Hepatitis Scotland worked in partnership with Waverley Care, The Hepatitis C Trust, Addaction and local NHS Boards to deliver Conversation Cafes and to launch the 3rd year of the 'Ever Injected? Get Tested' campaign.

The 'Big Red C' was out and about at St Enoch Square for photos with the general public, as well as a visit from a First bus with the new advertising on show.

Now in its third year, the month-long campaign aims to reach the 18,000 Scots who are unaware that they are living with hep C and encourage them to get tested. This year, the core message remains the same, that getting testing is a priority, and to reinforce this, testing was available free at the launch.

Hepatitis C is a major cause of liver disease but is completely curable. Those at risk should get tested before the virus caused long-term health problems. The virus can be difficult to detect because sufferers often exhibit few, if any, symptoms.

A simple pinprick test is used, which only takes a couple of minutes - then the results are sent off which takes a couple of weeks for diagnosis.

Later in the day, the hepatitis C awareness drive was continuing with a day long hep C conversation cafe at the Church of the Nazarene in Parkhead, Glasgow held by North East Recovery Community (NERC) alongside Hepatitis Scotland.

The event, aimed at the recovery community in North East Glasgow, was entitled 'Hep C & Me' and covered topics such as “What does Hep C mean to you?”, prevention of hep C in that particular area, what treatment is available, what possible barriers people have in the area for gaining access to treatment and support in North East Glasgow.

The conversation cafe was well attended by a fantastic group from the community, who were full of ideas and solutions to many of the problems facing those who perhaps want to get tested, or are already living with the disease.

After the discussions, there was the option to get tested by a member of the Waverley Care staff, which was well attended.
