Jaddanbai: The Truth Behind The Controversies
In the illustrious history of Hindi cinema, Jaddanbai stands as a true pioneer in every field—from filmmaking and direction to dance and music. But today, her name is often tarnished by malicious rumors. We're here to set the record straight and prove that she had no direct family connection to the Nehru dynasty.
The first person to cast a shadow on her name was a journalist named Ramakrishna. In his memoir, he falsely claimed that actress Nargis was Motilal Nehru's granddaughter, suggesting that Jaddanbai was Motilal's illegitimate daughter. The author, a known RSS supporter, seemed to use this story as a way to attack the Nehru family.
The truth is very different. Jaddanbai's birth name was Daliya. She was a child widow who was abandoned by her in-laws and later adopted by the famous courtesan Dalipabai. Dalipabai trained her in music and dance, and Jaddanbai went on to become a respected and successful artist, even recording for HMV.
She had three marriages and three children. Her first marriage to Narottamdas Khatri produced a son, Akhtar Hussain. Her second marriage to Ustad Irshad Mir Khan resulted in another son, Anwar Hussain. Her third and final marriage was to Dr. Mohan Babu, a professional who gave up his career to marry her. He converted to Islam for their wedding, which was overseen by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. Their daughter was the legendary actress Nargis.
The rumor about the Nehru connection likely started because Jawaharlal Nehru considered Nargis his "Rakhi sister." This was a term of endearment and respect, not a sign of a blood relation. As confirmed in Sanjay Dutt's official biography, this relationship existed because Jaddanbai's family was well-acquainted with Motilal Nehru. Jawaharlal Nehru had many such affectionate relationships with prominent figures of his time.
Jaddanbai was a self-made woman who built her legacy from nothing. She was an inspiration and a trailblazer, and her story is a testament to her strength and talent, not a platform for political slander.
