#84: Offensive and defensive options from the hand post single.

In wrestling we are taught to snap people down so their hands go to the mat. There’s many reasons for this. One is that when his hand is on the mat, his back is now parallel to the floor, which takes away his power. Another reason is that now I can control his hand and prevent his offense. In general, I want my wrestlers to keep their hands off the mat when they are working on shots. It opens up a whole series of things for the defensive player that he did not have until his hand hit the mat. If you’re very high level, you know the risks. But if you aren’t, this is a good fundamental thing to understand and avoid. Stick to the fundamentals. Do the John Smith outside single finish. Do the cutback if he isn’t stuffing your head. You’re unlikely to recover a high head position when the defensive man is doing the proper defense and stuffing your head.
