24-year-old Sabitri Rana was partially deaf when she was born, and by the age of six had completely lost her hearing. She often worried that she would be unable to communicate with others, but after joining a secondary school for deaf children she was able to learn sign language.

After leaving school, Sabitri tried to find work but found that her disability was holding her back. One day she spotted a training opportunity for women with hearing disabilities offered by Plan International and our working partner Right4Children. She decided to apply and was accepted onto a course to learn housekeeping skills.

The course, with instructions in sign language, taught the young women life skills such as personal safety and development, as well as cleaning, bed making and gardening techniques. Sabitri says her confidence has grown and she hopes to soon get a job in the hotel industry. "My ambition is to take care of my family. With the help of Plan International and Right4Children, I have been able to help myself."
