A febrile seizure is a fit that occurs in children when they have a fever. They are also known as febrile convulsions. Febrile seizures are usually triggered by a fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher. They can occur during illnesses like the flu, a cold, or an ear infection.

Symptoms:
► A child experiencing a febrile seizure may:
► Lose consciousness
► Have stiff limbs
► Twitch their arms and legs
► Wet themselves

When to seek help:
► Call emergency services if your child:
► Has a seizure for the first time
► Has a seizure that lasts longer than 5 minutes
► Has difficulty breathing
► Has stiffness and twitching on only one side of their body
► Is more sleepy than usual for more than 1 hour after the seizure stops
► Has more than 1 seizure within 24 hours

Febrile seizures are usually harmless and don't cause long-term neurological or cognitive problems. Most children outgrow them by age 5.
