The UK's road quality ranks 37th in the world, and the country's roads are busier than ever due to increased freight traffic and the growing number of SUVs and electric cars. The poor state of the roads has become a key issue for the Conservative Party, particularly in rural areas where many of their traditional supporters live. The government has promised to invest in road repairs, but critics argue that the funding falls short of what is needed. Innovative solutions, such as rubberised asphalt and self-healing materials, are being developed, but they require additional funding. The National Infrastructure Commission has recommended increased funding for road maintenance, while the RAC suggests ring-fencing a portion of fuel duty revenue for this purpose.
