Most people breathe shallowly without realizing it. Stress, past trauma, emotional pain, and the pressures of everyday life all accumulate in the body, tightening the lungs and diaphragm and restricting our breath. When the breath stays trapped in the chest, we remain anxious, reactive, disconnected, and overwhelmed — unable to digest our lived experiences or the emotions tied to them.

Heartbreak intensifies these patterns.
Breakups, ghosting, divorce, emotional abandonment — these experiences don’t just hurt because of what’s happening now. They awaken the older hurts we never fully processed. And when all of that rises to the surface, most people resist it. They tighten, numb themselves, distract, deny, and collapse into the pain. This resistance places the entire body-mind in a contracted state.

And contraction always shows up in the breath.

Shallow breathing activates the sympathetic nervous system, keeping us stuck in a low-level fight-or-flight mode. In that state, the body loses its ability to metabolize emotional experience. Unprocessed stress, grief, fear, and abandonment pain accumulate. We get stuck in looping thoughts, fixation, panic, and emotional overwhelm because the body is still holding the backlog of undigested experience.

Deep breathing changes everything.
When you breathe softly, slowly, and deeply — all the way down into the abdomen — the body begins to open. The parasympathetic nervous system activates. Space begins to form inside you. Stress and overwhelm ease. The emotional shock, grief, and fear tied to heartbreak become more workable.

This way of breathing allows the deeper layers of emotion to diffuse, soften, and eventually digest.
