Our guest for this session Orkun Ağır invited musicians who firmly believe in his music. We recorded this session at Kunstfort bij Vijfhuizen.

At an early age, Orkun learned to play the bağlama, a stringed instrument from the family of long-necked lutes originally from Central Asia.

Orkun developed a great love for Ottoman music, the classical music of Turkey from the 17th and 18th centuries.

He later studied composition at the conservatory and writes contemporary classical pieces, in which he often also finds a role for the bağlama. “I work on one or more compositions every night; For me, writing music is like processing the day, more or less like a form of self-therapy. Each commission is like an empty diary that is handed over in which I write now and then.”

Orkun Ağır is often applauded by contemporary pioneers and criticized by conservatives for the controversial changes he made to the bağlama; “for making the instrument more concert-worthy, to be able to use it in a European classical/contemporary context”.
