How to rig and fish big swimbaits / soft plastic paddle tail lures

Most people will have their own take on Rigging fishing lures whether they are massive swimbaits or tiny drop shot worms, these can range from hook preferences to just the addition of little tricks to make the lure work better for them. For me the best rigging methods always come out of a combination of experience and experimentation and watching my good friend Maciej of MEL Lures making his rigs and talking to him you realise he puts both of these to good use.He is alsos bloody handy at making the tools he needs to do the job, like the bait holder screw making gadget.

Despite looking a bit complex this rig does everything it is supposed to very well, first off that large screw secures the bait through the cast or should I say casts and he lobs this thing some distance over and over again, while I have to break for sleeping spells between throwing much smaller things. There is a huge amount of force acting on that bait as it arcs overhead and slams into the water, weighing in at 280 grams.

The second part of the rig holds the hooks in the right position that is until a big pike decided to smack it senseless. Then the bonus kicks in as the pike is hooked and if it tries to lever itself off the hooks the bait slips away and he or she hopefully is left hold the hooks. It also makes unhooking a lot easier as pike seldom come into the boat with monster lure stuck in their mouth.

For a long time I have had my doubts about fishing with large swimbaits or soft plastic lures after all I have had large pike on little wiggly things. But I have to be honest with the right equipment to use it like a good rod and reel; throwing this size lure does not feel that extreme in fact almost comfortable and does almost guarantee you are going to catch bigger fish.

There is also something very seductive about a big lure and big paddle tail lolping along without a care in the world you just know something lurking in the deep is going to be thinking it would make a great meal and it is not going to be something small with big ideas.

But it would be great to hear your own take on all this.
