Woodturning Spalted Maple - The Splat Bowl

My friend Jason sent me a piece of gorgeous spalted maple back in the spring and I decided it was about time to see what I could do with it. Blank diameter was about 10” - the largest thing I’ve done so far and I was glad that he had already rounded it off before he sent it to me!
It had a couple of good sized cracks i cut out, and a really cool void that looks to me like a paint splat on the floor. I used Liquid Diamonds epoxy resin, a little bit of 5-minute epoxy and CA glue to fill the holes and cracks.

I tried Howard’s Feed & Wax on this bowl, and I have to say I’m really pleased with the finis h. I’ll definitely be using it again on decorative pieces that I don’t necessarily want overly shiny. I sanded from 80 - 1000 grit and used a homemade polishing paste after the Feed & Wax, and this bowl feels amazing!
