√The history of Sri Lanka is intertwined with the history of the larger  Indian subcontinent  and surrounding regions including South Asia ,  Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean region. Remains of Adi Man (Balangoda Man) found on the island of Sri Lanka date back to about 38,000 years ago.
√The history of this island is recorded based on the descriptive history of three books written in Pali called Mahavamsa, Dipavamsa and Cholavamsa. 
√These genealogies provide historical accounts of the arrival of the Sinhalese from North India. The island's modern history dates back to the 3rd century AD. 
√These chronicles describe the history of Sri Lanka from the time of the founding of the Tambapanni kingdom by the early ancestors of the Sinhalese in the 6th century BC. 
√King Pandukavaya of the kingdom of Anuradhapura in the 4th century BC is said to be the first ruler of Sri Lanka. 
√Arhat Mahinda (son of Indian Emperor Ashoka) introduced Buddhism to the island in the 3rd century BC.
√The island was initially unified but was divided into many kingdoms in the following centuries. But it was reunited for a brief period (between 997-1077 AD) under Chola rule. 
√Sri Lanka was ruled by 181 emperors from Anuradhapura to Kandy period. 
√A significant part of the island was under Portuguese rule from 1597-1658. 
√However, due to Dutch intervention in the Eighty Years' War, the Portuguese withdrew from the colony established in Ceylon. 
√The island was united under British rule in 1815 after the Kandyan War. 
√However, within a short period of the colonial rule, there were two armed revolts against the British, the Ubha Rebellion in 1818 and the Matale Rebellion in 1848. 
√Sri Lanka finally gained independence in 1948. However, the country was dominated by the British Empire until 1972.

√A coup d'état was attempted in 1962 against the government under Sirimavo Bandaranaike. 
√However, Sirimavo's government successfully suppressed the rebellion.

√Sri Lanka became a republic in 1972. 
√Sri Lanka enacted its own constitution in 1978. According to the constitution, the executive president is the head of state. 
√Sri Lanka's civil war began in 1983, five years after the constitution. However, in 1971 and 1987 Sri Lanka also had two rebellions. 
√The 25-year-long civil war ended with the defeat of the LTTE in 2009.

√At present, Sri Lanka is in a state of unrest due to hyperinflation and the declaration of Sri Lanka's bankruptcy. 
√As a result, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his cabinet were forced to resign. President Gotabaya Rajapakse is also under pressure to resign. 
√Currently, instability prevails in the country.
