The Story of Birgu (Città Vittoriosa)
Nestled along Malta’s Grand Harbour, Birgu is one of the island’s oldest and most historic cities. Its roots stretch back to medieval times, long before Valletta was even founded. Due to its strategic location, Birgu became a vital maritime center, especially during the times of knights, sieges, and empires.
In 1530, when the Knights of St. John arrived in Malta, they chose Birgu as their first seat of power. They built Fort St. Angelo into a formidable stronghold, turning Birgu into the center of military and religious life on the island. The city quickly transformed into a fortified town, full of palaces, auberges, churches, and narrow streets built for defense.
Birgu’s most dramatic moment came in 1565, during the Great Siege of Malta. The city withstood relentless attacks by the Ottoman Empire, and its brave resistance became legendary. For its courage, Birgu was honored with the name Città Vittoriosa, meaning “Victorious City.”
After the siege, the Knights shifted their capital to Valletta, but Birgu remained a cultural and historical treasure. Over the centuries, it evolved quietly—preserving its rich heritage in stone walls, hidden courtyards, and ancient churches.
Today, Birgu is a charming mix of old and new. The Vittoriosa Marina welcomes luxury yachts where galleys once docked. Its Inquisitor’s Palace, Maritime Museum, and Fort St. Angelo attract visitors seeking a glimpse of Malta’s layered past. Meanwhile, locals still hang flowers from balconies and greet each other in the winding alleys, keeping the soul of the city alive.
