Lisbon, Portugal was everything we thought it would be and more. We've been hearing amazing things about Lisbon for years so we were so excited to check it out when we arrived. Here are some of the best things to do in Lisbon in one day!!!

We started a little bit differently from usual. Whereas we normally began with a local cup of coffee, we instead focused on something sweet to kick the day off. We still grabbed coffee, but Pastéis de Belém isn't specifically known for that. They’re most known for their pastries and they’ve been a pillar in the local sweets industry since 1837. We had pastel de nata in Porto and we’ve been talking about it ever since, so we figured that’d be a fun little way to kick off our one day in Lisbon!

Another reason we chose Pastéis de Belém is because of its proximity to our first “tourist” stop of the day. Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (or Jeronimos Monastery) is considered the most important tourist attraction in Lisbon. The Jeronimos Monastery is the most impressive symbol of Portugal's power and wealth during the Age of Discovery. King Manuel I built it in 1502 on the site of a hermitage founded by Prince Henry the Navigator, where Vasco da Gama and his crew spent their last night in Portugal in prayer before leaving for India. It was built to commemorate Vasco Da Gama's voyage and to give thanks to the Virgin Mary for its success.

We then headed towards more of the center of Lisbon, but on the way we stopped at LX Factory. LX Factory is a modern hip art centre that houses various start-up businesses, ranging from funky restaurants to workspaces for designers and artists. The building complex dates back to 1846 where it began as a weaving and textile company. However over time this little area of Lisbon started to take shape of what it is today and is a major source of tourism for the Alcântara neighborhood.

Commerce Plaza is a large harbor-facing square & was largely used for trade throughout Lisbon’s history. There used to be Palace at the Square that was destroyed by the great Lisbon earthquake in 1755, which lead the king at the time King Jose 1 to move further inland to Ajuba. The gorgeous 18th century buildings and arcades make this one of Lisbon’s most beautiful squares.

We then made a stop for lunch. We tried to go to Martinho da Arcada, however it was a bit too pricey, so we settled for something a bit out of the center of town LOL.

After eating we made our way to Convento do Carmo, which translates to Carmo Convent. Carmo Convent is a former catholic convent, which was ruined during the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. The monastery dates back to medieval times in the 14th century and was active until its demised in the 18th century. Nowadays the ruined Carmo Church is used as an archaeological museum & is 5 euros to enter. PRO TIP: Take the Santa Justa Lift up the hill when visiting the Convent.

We hope you like castles! Castelo del São Jorge, or Saint George’s Castle, is one of the most emblematic monuments in Lisbon, situated on the highest hill in the city. Human occupation of the castle hill dates to at least the 8th century BC while the first fortifications built date from the 1st century BC. Since the 12th century, the castle has variously served as a royal palace, a military barracks, and now as a national monument and museum.

We finished the night at one of our favorite places we've been to so far in Europe. We stopped at Timeout Market, which is a giant food hall in the Ribeira market. It houses over 30 restaurants & vendors, so it’s basically a street food market. Not only was this recommended my a friend but it’s also in the top 3 of just about every guide we found online and it’s pretty clear to see why.

Thank you so much for tuning in and see you in a few days in our next vlog!! Please subscribe if you're new!! Thanks again!!
