In the morning of 22 of June 1941, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Metropolian Sergius called the believers to defend Russia.
The Church managed to raise a large amount of money that helped build the entire tank column.
The priests actively helped the partisans. Some of them even received state awards.
In the Polessk Diocese, more than half of the priests were executed for assisting the partisans.
Some of the priests in the occupied territories and in emigration supported the Nazis. But they were few.
Germans supported construction of new churches hoping to win the support of churchgoers. But they were against the unity of the church.
“It is in our best interests that each village has its own sect. There may even be shaman cults… it only helps to divide Russia” – Adolf Hitler used to say.
Bishops were forced to cut ties with Moscow Patriarchy.
The Metropolitan of Kiev Alexi and Patriarchal Exarch of the Baltics Sergius were killed. Metropolitan of Minsk Pantaleimon was placed under house arrest.
