How to Lace Running Shoes to Prevent Foot Pain

Hi, I’m Dr. Michael Helms of Indy Podiatry of central Indiana. I want to show you a simple trick that can help relieve pain on the top of your foot when you’re wearing your running shoes. A lot of runners and walkers complain of pain on the top of their foot. Those people tend to have a higher arch or prominence on the top of their foot. And we can do a simple re-lacing of the shoes that usually prevents that pain from occurring.   So normally, you would bring the lace and cross over. But what I want you to do instead is to take this lace and come up to the next eyelet on the same side, same thing on this side, and then cross above. We’ve now created a little pressure relief pouch so that area that’s more prominent on your foot is no longer painful when you tie your shoes.

This will relieve pressure over the more prominent area and make the pain go away. This also allows you to continue to tie your shoe as snuggly as you normally would while just taking pressure off the painful area.
