Ah, the underrated shaving horse! One of the most important tool in the kit of the woodsman and largely neglected today. My old shaving horse, built just over a year ago, helped me get through the first year of crazy shingle production. Over fifteen thousand individual shingles. But she was hastily slapped together using scrap lumber. The seat was far too narrow, leading to a sore ass. The pegs were a bit loose and, above all, it was unpleasant to the eyes.

This new shaving horse, hewn out of a single block of white oak, should serve for many years. Few things please me more than adding a new piece of equipment to my kit. Once the weather breaks, I’ll be back in the field laying stone and putting on shingles, but for now, I’m trying to keep warm in my crowded shop, building and manufacturing anything that catches my fancy. Come on SPRING!

Why did I narrate some of this in French? Merely an exercise. I can read and write French moderately well but speaking it? That’s a real struggle. I’m no geneticist but I have a vague theory that, due to my French Canadian ancestors, my speech is more geared towards the flowing French language than the blocky English. I most closely resemble my Quebecois great grandfather than anyone else in my family and it would make sense(to me) that I may have inadvertently inherited my somewhat high pitched nasally voice from that same source.

What do you think? Am I a Frenchman stuck in the Anglosphere or should I abandon all ambitions of conquering a foreign language?
