Bodhi Tree of Bodhgaya: Story of enlightenment of Buddha and Repeated Destructions

The Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment is situated just behind the Mahabodhi temple. It is one of the most important centres of Pilgrimage for Buddhists around the world. After enlightenment Buddha spent his first week meditating under the Mahabodhi tree.
According to Buddhist scriptures, it sprung up at the same time as Siddharth’s birth in Lumbini. It is the site where Mara and his army got scattered by the violent earthquake that shook the earth.
It got destroyed several times and was always on the target of anyone who wanted to destroy Buddhism in India. Every time the tree was destroyed, a new sapling was planted in the same place. The current tree is the fifth incarnation of the original tree.
