A Math3ma Institute Lecture

Can we teach and think about mathematics from a biblical worldview? The answer is a resounding “yes,” as author James Nickel discusses in his 2001 book Mathematics: Is God Silent? Going a step further, this talk will highlight another series of questions: What does it mean to approach mathematical research from a biblical worldview? And what does it mean to discover new math, anyway? I will address these questions by giving an example based on “A New Perspective of Entropy,” an article recently published in The Journal of The Math3ma Institute that unfolds a new connection between two seemingly disparate topics in science, namely information theory and higher mathematics. This talk will give a non-technical introduction to the ideas and will not assume attendees have prior knowledge of either subject.

Aimed at a general audience, The Math3ma Institute Public Lectures are engaging and accessible talks by TMU faculty and colleagues on a wide range of topics in mathematics, engineering, science, and technology, all from a Biblical perspective. All lectures are free and open to the public and include time for discussion and dialogue with speakers and attendees.
