Whether analyzing gene expression or protein production, the exciting new field of spatial biology (or spatial omics) goes beyond traditional single-cell genomics. In addition to informing which genes and proteins are expressed, spatial biology reveals where they are located. This spatial information is critically important when uncovering the biology of complex environments, such as a SARS-CoV-2 infected lung or differentiating the complexities between a cancer tumor and its microenvironment.

Kary Mullis, the inventor of PCR, once noted that, “science consistently produces a new crop of miraculous truths and dazzling devices every year.” Although true, few new technologies can match the significance of laboratory mainstays—like PCR and next-gen sequencing—that have revolutionized scientific research. Spatial biology, however, shows enormous promise to be counted among those game-changers.

In this GEN Live episode, we’re excited to have team leaders from young spatial companies join us to discuss the new frontier of “spatial” biology, how far the field has come in a short time and the advances that it promises for the future.
