Today, we continue our study in the parables of Jesus Christ. One of the things we are going to discover in our study is that Jesus is the greatest teacher this world has ever known. And a big reason for this is that Jesus taught his disciples using parables. And with over 40 parables that Jesus taught in the Word of God, here are the 5 we are focused on:

The Parable of the Sower (last week’s sermon)
The Parable of the Persistent Widow (this week’s)
The Parable of the Talents (next week’s)
The Parable of the Prodigal Son
The Parable of the Good Samaritan

The word “parable” literally means to “cast alongside of.” Think of the parables of Jesus as one of those motorcycles with a passenger cart attached to it. Don’t those look like so much fun (just don’t try it on Bird Road or US 1)! Each story that Jesus tells is like the motorcycle, but the story itself is transporting a truth right alongside of it about the way the kingdom of God works & how we should live as citizens of this kingdom.

My prayer is that through this study that the Father will give us eyes to see & ears to hear Jesus reviving up the engine and inviting us to sit right alongside of him and enjoy the ride.

Today we have before us the Parable of the Persistent Widow. The great thing about this Parable is that just like the Parable of the Sower, we don’t have to guess the true meaning of the parable. Jesus tells us the meaning of the parable right in verse 1.

Luke 18:1 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. So, why does Jesus give us this parable? He gave it to us in order to teach us why we should always pray & never give up. As a matter of fact, prayer is a major theme in Luke 18. Let me show you the 3 prayers that are offered up in Luke 18:

The Widow’s Prayer: Luke 18:3 “Grant me justice against my adversary.”
The Tax Collector’s Prayer: Luke 18:13 “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
The Blind Beggar’s Prayer: Luke 18:39 "Son of David, have mercy on me!"
