Four lectures are dedicated to the synchronization topics. Here is the first one that discusses the most basic concepts. The next three lectures are for software solutions (2 lectures) and hardware solutions. Topics covered in this first lecture are:

1) Why is synchronization needed?
2) The basics of race conditions
3) Critical sections
4) Mutual exclusion
5) The critical section protocol
6) Conditions for a good solution to the critical section problem: mutual exclusion, progress and bounded waiting
7) A few related terms: deadlock-free and starvation-free
