They say “taking candy from a baby is hard,” but is it really? The MythBusters team decided to test it. First, they needed to measure how much grip strength a baby has when holding candy. They set up a device that could hold the candy and connected it to a force gauge to see exactly how much force was required to take it. The first volunteer was a six-month-old baby; given a lollipop, the baby immediately grabbed it and started eating. When Jaime slowly brought the robotic arm closer, the baby noticed and resisted, but it only took 1.43 kg (3.16 lb) of force to get the candy.
The second volunteer, 14-month-old Anakah, consciously held onto the candy when she saw the arm. Jaime changed tactics: he tied a string to the lollipop and attached it to the arm, then pulled slowly. Anakah noticed, but the candy slid off, requiring only 0.49 kg (1.08 lb) of force.
Finally, 18-month-old Frankie was tested. Interestingly, as babies got older, it took less force to take the candy — because the bigger babies relied more on strategy than muscle. So, do you still think taking candy from a baby is really that hard?
