Hi Dr Sandeep, my relative has pain in her Breast. Can it be Cancer?

Pain in the breast is a very common symptom. About 40 to 50% of women experience pain in their breast sometime during their life., most of the time it h as no reasons. Most of the people get worried and they go to the doctor. Most of often it is not because of cancer. The nature of pain in the breast can be of wide variety. It can be pricking pain, throbbing pain, sometimes just heaviness. sometimes it is not describable. Generally when we talk about pan in the pain in the breast, we talk about 23 distinct entities of pain. One is Cyclical Mastalgia. The other is Non Cyclical Mastalgia. Cyclical Mastalgia means it is associated with your menstrual periods. So when we talk about Cyclical it is related to your periods. So it is usually 21 weeks before or 2 weeks leading to menstrual period is seen in both the breast and expressed as heaviness in the breasts. Generally it is because of hormonal change and this liked of pain is not of any concern. So simple painkillers if it is not bearable,. Otherwise it does not require any treatment., the other type of pain is Non Cyclical Mastalgia, where it is not associated with the menstrual periods. Usually this type of pain is seen in people who are menopausal and it is generally only one side. So this type fop pain w e have to investigate and it could be because of infections, tumors and we need to evalauate and come to a reasons. If we dont find a reason, it is called as Non Specific Mastalgia, which means we don’t have any cause for it but breast is pain. What I have seen is people come for Breast pain generally because of Bone pain or extramammary Mastalgia, what we call.
