A Mutual Aid support network is a grassroots initiative where individuals come together to provide assistance and resources to one another based on the principle of solidarity and cooperation. Unlike traditional charity models, Mutual Aid focuses on reciprocity and collective action rather than hierarchical structures or top-down assistance.

Participants in a Mutual Aid network may offer various forms of emotional support or skills-sharing, depending on the needs of the community. This support is typically provided voluntarily and without any expectation of monetary compensation and fosters volunteerism, building a community of care network.

Mutual Aid networks often emerge during times of crisis or when existing social systems fail to address the needs of marginalized or vulnerable populations adequately. These networks are based on the belief that communities possess the collective power and resources to care for each other and address systemic issues together.

Key principles of Mutual Aid include autonomy, solidarity, inclusivity, and horizontal organization. Mutual Aid networks provide immediate relief by fostering cooperation and mutual support, building communities’ resilience, and challenging existing power structures. In essence, Mutual Aid is about neighbours coming together to support each other in times of need, creating stronger, more connected communities in the process.
