BMPCC4K vs BMPCC6K (Leica R Summicron and Metabones Speedbooster XL)

Описание к видео BMPCC4K vs BMPCC6K (Leica R Summicron and Metabones Speedbooster XL)

Since I just got a BMPCC6K, I decided to put it side by side with my BMPCC4K and see if I could spot any differences. For this test I used my Leica R (35mm and 50mm, EF mount) and in order to adapt these lenses to the MFT mount of the BMPCC4K, I used a Metabones Speedbooster XL Cine, EF to BMPCC4K. I really wanted to see what the field of view would look like with the XL Speedbooster. I tried to be as precise as possible. Settings are identical on both cameras (same WB, ISO, codec etc.). Because the Speedbooster gives the Pocket 4K an extra 1 1/3 stop of light, I opened up the 6K of an extra stop (except the last shot). Of course this is not 100% accurate but I tried to go as close as I could. This is NOT a scientific test by any means. Anyway, here is what I noticed: overall the two cameras are pretty similar and very close in colors, dynamic range and noise level. But to me the 6K has a slightly smoother highlights roll-off, the shadows are a little bit cleaner and of course it’s a bit sharper. The main difference I found is in the skin tones though. The 6K looks definitely better and there is less red in the image. In the Pocket 4K the skin tones look a little bit brownish in certain scenarios, while in the 6K they are always incredibly accurate and pleasant. Overall I always preferred the image out of the 6K because it looks more solid and very very close to an Ursa Mini Pro. The Metabones XL worked pretty good with my Leicas, but the infinity focus comes in a lot earlier than the marker on the lens. I tried to adjust the rear element and rotating it, but at some point the lens and the adapter were touching each other. You probably need to modify the lens in order to work properly with this adapter.
At the end, both cameras are great, but I think 6K can really compete with real cinema camera like the Ursa Mini or RED and maybe, why not, an Alexa, especially when paired with lenses such as the Leica R Summicron. Gonna definitely keep my Pocket 4K as a B-cam for now.
