Would someone just leave their house open and say, “Go for it?” That’s what happens to me at this city view home near Seattle, where I have an afternoon to fill boxes and a truck with whatever I deem is worth selling from this 50 year estate.

What a great gig! There’s plenty worth saving from this house, and you get to keep me company while I’m picking. The family traveled due to government work, so there’s things from all over the world—Japanese cloisonné, a Swiss wind-up bear, Zulu dance masks, even a plate from a fussy English maker with a decidedly unfussy subject on the face of it.

My job is to ferret out the desirable and collectible from the worn or uninteresting things the family left in the house and sheds. We leave no stone unturned, venturing from the cozy antique kitchen into storage shelves of dolls and toys, a woodshed with vintage tools and a garage where a surprising old beer tray survives the test of time!

The great thing about picking through a long-time accumulation is the chance to see things we might not elsewhere. Is that really a WWII air raid siren randomly hung in a shed? Did they really mix silver with nickel back then? Whose plate is this one marked DDE? This house proves to have a lot of regular fun collectibles, a few nice quality pieces and a handful of really exclusive items we might never see again!

We leave with a half-a-van full of great things to bring to market for the first time in 50 years…and a real appreciation for the interesting lives of the people who accumulated this collection. Now to pass it on to future collectors!
