Here is the transcript for the video:

Hello English learners! Welcome to Learn English with Trisha and Hope! I’m Trisha and this is Hope!

How are you doing? I’m having a great day and I hope you are too!

Today let’s learn about the phrasal verb ‘run over’. It can mean different things depending upon the context. Let’s go over some of those now and hopefully you will have a better understanding of how and when to use it.

1) ‘Run over’ can refer to being knocked down or hit, like by a car, here are some examples with different tenses:

The car is going to run over Elsa.
The car is running over Elsa.
The car ran over Elsa.

Let’s see this in action:

“Oh no! The car is going to run over Elsa!”
“Oh no! The car is running over Elsa!”
“Oh no! The car ran over Elsa!”

Yes, its silly, but maybe it will help you to remember!
Let’s go over some more sample sentences:

The bus is going to run over the box.
Ow! The cart is running over my toes!
The truck ran over the squirrel?
The girl on that skateboard almost ran over a big bug!
I accidentally ran over a banana with my car.
He always runs over my flowers with the lawn mower.

2) In the second definition ‘run over’ refers to something filling a container and then overflowing the capacity of that container – here are some examples:

You’re adding too much water to the bathtub – it’s going to run over!
Oh no! The bathtub is running over!
Uh oh! The bathtub ran over.

Let’s see this one in action:
You’re adding too much water to the bathtub – it’s going to run over!
Oh no! The bathtub is running over!
Uh oh! The bathtub ran over.

Let’s go over some more sample sentences:

If you keep adding more it’s going to run over.
She poured the tea until the cup ran over.
Stop pouring the water in the bucket – it’s running over!
You put so much milk in your glass that it ran over and made a big mess!

3) This one is similar but not quite the same meaning as the previous use of ‘run over’ This one usually refers to money or time exceeding a limit.

Oh no! we bought too many apples and are going to run over our budget for this month’s groceries!
We’re late because our first meeting ran over by 15 minutes.
More samples:
His project ran over budget.
The meeting ran over by 30 minutes. (Which means that the meeting lasted for 30 minutes longer than it was supposed to. But – if you leave out the word ‘by’ it has a little different meaning: )
The meeting ran over 30 minutes! (Which is just saying that the meeting lasted more than 30 minutes, there may or may not have been any expectation before the meeting for how long it would last. The words and the tone I used suggest that I am complaining about the meeting lasting for so long.)

4) In the 4th case we mean to quickly check or review something

I think you should run over the list one more time, to make sure you don’t forget something.
Let’s run over the song one more time before we sing it for the party.
Apples, bananas, pears, grapes and oranges I think you should run over the list one more time, just to make sure you don’t forget something.
Ok! Good job! But let’s run over the song one more time before we play it onstage.

He always runs over his speeches one last time before walking up to the podium.
She ran over the items on the meeting agenda one more time before leaving.

5) In this last use of ‘run over’ it means to come by for a quick visit or to go someplace for a short time, usually by driving or walking. It doesn’t mean to literally run – as is walking really fast. Here are some samples:

I need to run over to the playground to pick up the toys that Dora left there.
I’ll run over to the grocery store after I finish swimming.

A couple more samples:

Can you run over to the neighbors house and borrow a cup of sugar?
I will run over to the school for a minute after I leave here.

That’s all I have today for the phrasal verb ‘run over’ – I hope it was helpful! And I sure hope Elsa will be ok, she’s had a really bad day! Goodbye!
