THE WARM WELCOME OF THE HEAVENLY KING
THE CLEANSING OF THE TEMPLE
AND THE CURSING OF THE FIG TREE

In Gospel of Matthew 21:1–22, we reach a decisive turning point in the Lord’s earthly ministry — the beginning of His final week before the cross.

Three profound events unfold:

• The warm welcome of the meek King (vv. 1–11)
• The cleansing of the temple (vv. 12–17)
• The cursing of the fig tree (vv. 18–22)

These are not isolated incidents. They are deeply connected revelations.

The Turning Point in the Gospel

In Gospel of Matthew 16, a major shift occurs. From that point forward, the Lord moves steadily toward rejection.

He travels:

From Caesarea Philippi
Through Galilee
Toward Judea
Along the road to Jerusalem
And finally to Bethphage at the Mount of Olives

He does not enter Jerusalem as a victim.
He comes as the sovereign King — presenting Himself as the Lamb for slaughter.

I. The Warm Welcome of the Meek King

The Lord deliberately arranges His entry.

He instructs His disciples to retrieve a donkey and a colt — knowing the exact location, the owner’s response, and the unfolding events. This is sovereignty in action.

This fulfills the ancient prophecy of Book of Zechariah 9:9:

“Behold, your King is coming to you, meek, and mounted on a donkey.”

A conquering king rides a war horse.
This King rides a beast of burden.

He comes not in political power — but in humility.

The crowd cries, “Hosanna to the Son of David!”
Garments are spread. Branches are waved.

The welcome is warm —
but it is shallow.

Within days, the same city will demand His crucifixion.

II. The Cleansing of the Temple

Upon entering Jerusalem, He goes directly to the temple.

He overturns tables.
He drives out money changers.
He declares it a house of prayer — not a den of robbers.

This is not temper.
This is righteous authority.

Religion had become commercialized.
Outward activity replaced inward reality.
Commerce displaced communion.

The meek King is gentle with the needy —
but uncompromising toward corruption.

After the cleansing, the blind and lame come to Him in the temple — and He heals them.

The true dwelling of God is revealed:

Not ritual.
Not profit.
But healing, restoration, and praise.

III. The Cursing of the Fig Tree

The next morning, He sees a fig tree full of leaves — but without fruit.

He speaks, and it withers.

This is not about agriculture.
It is a sign.

Throughout Scripture, the fig tree represents Israel.

Leaves without fruit.
Appearance without life.
Religion without righteousness.

The nation had ceremonies, Scriptures, and sacrifices — but lacked spiritual reality.

The Lord exposes a system full of leaves yet empty of fruit.

The Spiritual Significance

These three events form one message:

The King comes in meekness.
The temple is cleansed.
The fruitless tree is judged.

Warm enthusiasm is not enough.
Religious activity is not enough.
Outward appearance is not enough.

He is looking for fruit.

Application

The question today is not:

Do we say “Hosanna”?
Do we appear devoted?
Do we participate outwardly?

The question is:

Is there fruit?
Is there genuine prayer?
Is there righteousness?
Is there submission to the King?

The meek King still comes.
He still exposes corruption.
He still seeks reality.

Leaves will not satisfy Him.

He desires fruit.

Matthew 21 is more than history.

The One riding the donkey
is the One who will hang on the cross.

The meek King
is the sacrificial Lamb.

And when He comes to us —

Will He find fruit?
Or only leaves?
