Fernando Pessoa: The Man Who Never Lived

Fernando Pessoa was a writer and philosopher whose literature is filled with philosophical insights. His most famous work, The Book of Disquiet, contains many random thoughts, one of the more interesting is his thoughts on why we appreciate nature and wilderness. Chances are we live in a city or a suburb or some sort of community (unless you've gone off the grid). Because we live in our man-made communities, this has become our new nature. The artificial is the new nature. So when we do get exposed to the wilderness, it's the new artificial, and that makes it interesting and beautiful to us. It's not so much a nature vs industry battle when it comes to aesthetics, but rather, industry helps makes nature beautiful through contrast.
