Weak explanations on the SF-86 are one of the biggest reasons applicants face delays, follow-up questioning, and additional scrutiny during their background investigation. The SF-86 isn’t just paperwork — it’s a national-security document, and every explanation you write must be clear, complete, and consistent with the rest of your history. In this video, I explain why vague, incomplete, or emotional explanations can hurt you and how to fix them before your form is reviewed by an investigator.
When you provide a weak explanation on the SF-86, it raises questions about accuracy, honesty, and attention to detail. Background investigators are trained to notice unclear language, missing context, and inconsistencies. If your explanation doesn’t fully answer what happened, when it happened, why it happened, and what you learned, the BI must dig deeper — which slows the process and may create unnecessary concerns.
A strong SF-86 explanation is factual, calm, concise, and professional. It should avoid excuses, emotional language, and vague statements like “it was a misunderstanding.” The investigator wants clarity, ownership, and maturity. A weak explanation looks like avoidance. A clear explanation looks like integrity.
This video breaks down how to write strong, confidence-boosting SF-86 explanations that help your background investigation move smoothly. Whether you're applying for CBP, Border Patrol, FBI, Secret Service, DEA, ATF, TSA, or any federal position that requires the SF-86, understanding how to properly explain past issues is essential.
Your SF-86 doesn’t need to be perfect — but it does need to be clear, complete, and honest. This video will show you how to do that the right way.
