Whitchurch, Hampshire Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Описание к видео Whitchurch, Hampshire Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Hampshire, and around 12 miles north of Winchester, is the town of Whitchurch (not to be confused with the town of Whitchurch in Shropshire).

Geographically, Whitchurch is situated along the River Test, on the southern fringe of the North Wessex Downs. Its name is believed to derive from Old English for 'white church', possibly alluding to an old Saxon church that was built from pale stone or whitewashed.

Just southwest of the town centre, seen at the start of the walk, is the Church of All Hallows. This dates all the way back to the Norman era, although it features additions from the 15th to 18th centuries, with some 19th century restoration.

In 1285 a royal charter was granted to Whitchurch. Historic industries in the town centred largely around its watermills. Of particular note in this regard is Whitchurch Silk Mill. This dates from the Regency era, and was initially a water-powered sawmill before being converted to a silk mill from 1817 to 1819 by William Maddick, silk manufacturer. As such, it is Britain’s oldest working silk mill. It has since become a museum, and features just before the 8-minute mark.

In 1854 the railway arrived in Whitchurch courtesy of the London and South Western Railway. Today the station is situated on the West of England Line which runs from Basingstoke to Exeter.
