Operating Drones in Ontario Parks
First, know that I am a licenced UAV pilot and respect the laws. I never fly my drone near other people or wildlife.
The laws governing drone usage in parks differ widely between national parks and Ontario provincial parks. National parks (Parks Canada) have their airspace designated as ‘restricted’ and the use of UAVs for recreational use is strictly prohibited. However, the laws governing aircraft in Ontario Parks is quite ambiguous and the airspace above provincial parks in Ontario is not officially ‘restricted’. The laws and regulations of Ontario Parks were written with respect to ‘aircraft’ and there are clearly some restrictions on landing (not taking off) aircraft in Ontario Parks. The federal laws are quite clear that UAVs are considered ‘aircraft’ but the provincial laws do not make this distinction clear. Furthermore, pilots of micro-drones, (drones that weigh less than 250g) are not bound by the same requirements as other drones.
