Responsive design doesn’t necessarily mean designing specific style rules for every possible screen size and every possible specific device. What it means generally is using a standard convention set of breakpoints for when you get below this size, then rearrange and layout this way. When you get below this size, then rearrange and layout this way.

And very specifically we end up talking to clients because they say “I pulled it up on my Windows XYZ whatever, iphone vs android, vs this device or that device and there’s some little tiny design element that doesn’t look perfect.”

Back when design was static, and some design still is - billboards, magazines, things in print - you can design perfectly to an absolute utter T and you can control that. And that’s it. Well websites are funky, the move, they change sizes. That same website needs to look great on my giant monitor at the office, on my macbook on the side of my desk, on my tablet, on my phone (yeah, I got too much stuff, what am I doing?) and that design has to adapt. So really, really big organizations with giant budgets like Amazon.com or Facebook, they have testing labs where they have just walls and racks of every device and they’ll do hands-on testing on those exact devices but it just isn’t cost effective to do that for small business websites.

So we design for those standard breakpoints and we can polish it based on even your personal device, you want to make sure that your website looks great on your phone, we can spend a little extra time and do that, but designing to very specific screen sizes or specific devices just costs more money because it takes more time.
