I've owned the JBL 104's for abour 2 months now and walk you through why I bought them, followed by a review and final sound test.

*This sound test is pretty horrendous IMO but I wanted to add it in there anyway. You really can't hear the difference at all, in fact the microphone is doing so much smoothing when it's recording the audio that the "EQ OFF" sounds "fuller' than the "EQ On". But take a critical listen with headphones to the lower mids around 200hz and you should be able to hear "something" removed from there. In the real world that 'something' is woof, but unfortunately in this recording it actually sounds like "fullness".
I'm putting this caveat here to show you i'm not delusional on this topic haha, I can hear what it sounds like for face value. When I do the real EQ calibration video I'll find a better way to record the room audio to make it present a truer replication of whats happening in the real world.

So yeah long story short, pretty much every review sings the praise of the JBL-104 but I'm not buying it. There's very obvious and harsh frequencies around 400hz-2k, I observed this in different rooms and across RCA, TRS and Aux. Between owning JBL gear before, loving the sound of the JBL 305p Mark2's and also the glowing reviews of the JBL 104's I decided that at $200 it was worth taking a punt on.

Out of the box they probably sound "fine" to listen to music, but as far as mixing / critical listening goes its like taking a Suzuki swift to the track... sure it'll go but..... Out of the box the 104's aren't great, but after using the Dayton UMM-6 to calibrate the speakers, they become capabale and nice sounding. It's like a blanket has been uncovered from them, it becomes much much clearer after calibration.

So in my case I was able to take a "not so great" sounding studio monitor and make it "usable". That's not really a glowing review or anything that I'd be reccommending to someone to go out and buy, so yeah as is I would stay away from these.

I'll be reaching out to JBL and see if there's a test unit I can look at to do some a/b comparisons, it's highly possible I got a dud unit?

ZReviews - The final kicker that I've just found as I'm uploading this video to youtube..... I just jumped back onto Z-Reviews channel to see what he was talking about with the 104's... and guess what? HE'S CALIBRATED THEM AS WELL!!!! No wonder he was singing their praises, it only takes an audiophile with the knowledge and hardware to tune these speakers to something usable. It really confirms my experience and puts a stamp on this whole video for me.
