Charleston, West Virginia What Went Wrong Here?

I drove through some of the most poverty stricken and worst areas of Charleston, WV to see how bad it really is. Charleston, West Virginia has been on the decline for many decades and still has not recovered from the loss of coal, gas, and industrial jobs. There are many abandoned homes, buildings, and businesses as a result. Crime is much higher than the national average and jobs are simply hard to come by. The population has been in decline since the 1960's which was at a high of over 85,000, and is now well under 50,000. I find Charleston to be an amazing place despite that. The people are for the most part very nice and friendly, and have amazing hospitality. I feel it has a lot of potential and of course it has some very nice areas like anywhere else, but can Charleston make a full recovery? Hopefully so. For now, let's check out some of the hardest hit parts.
