A Resounding Success for Ottawa Comiccon in its sophomore year
Monday, May 13, 2013 -- The second edition of the Ottawa Comiccon was a tremendous success, with over 30,000 fans of pop culture and entertainment walking through the halls of the Ernst & Young Centre. They came dressed as Klingons, Jawas, or Sailor Moon, braving the chill and rain, and stood patiently in line under the massive tents to be let into to the event. From start to finish, thousands of fans in and out of costume beamed and smiled as they posed for pictures, attended celebrity Q&As, or tried to locate that elusive collectible. Over the three days, many lines snaked around for fans to get an opportunity to get their items signed by their favourite celebrity, or partake in a photo op with them.
It all started Friday, where attendees got to enjoy talks with Billy Dee Williams, Kevin Sorbo and LeVar Burton. Hundreds of fans swooned at the late night concert featuring James Marsters, best known as Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and discovered talented opener David Martel.
Saturday had the largest number of people and activities, with many screenings, workshops and panels including comedy bits with Sketcharades, BattleCOM and Star Trek Improv with Crystal Basement. The highlight of the day for most was the standing-room-only Firefly Q&A, featuring Jewel Staite and Nathan Fillion, where Summer Glau, who had to suddenly cancel here appearance, was joined to the panel via Skype. Additional highlights included the talks with Felicia Day, Michael Shanks, and the Batman '66 Q&A with Julie Newmar and Burt Ward.
On Sunday, Guest of Honour Gillian Anderson took to the Hall 4 stage, where over a thousand fans of X-Files fans came ready with 20 years of questions. A packed room was ready for Nathan Fillion's solo panel, but he surprised fans when Jewel Staite joined him on stage after a few minutes. They shared many humorous anecdotes with the audience, including one about a dinner the previous night with several of the guests, where a patron recognized Wil Wheaton, and asked Nathan Fillion to take the picture. With constant lines for his autographs and photo ops, and standing-room only at his inspirational talk about life, love and everything related to geek culture, Wheaton's popularity is unmistakeable.
One of the discoveries of the 2013 edition was the inclusion of Manu Bennett, best known as Crixus on Spartacus, Slade Wilson on CTV's Arrow, and Azog the Defiler in The Hobbit. A newcomer to conventions, with Ottawa Comiccon being his first in Canada, the New Zealander received a warm welcome from fans and reciprocated two-fold. After his motivating Q&A, he shook fans hands from the stage, giving them warm regards, having to be pulled away lest he miss his flight to New Zealand.
With such a wonderful reaction from fans and an amazing turn-out, the Ottawa Comiccon is surely becoming one of the must-see events of the Ottawa region, and promises to grow more in the coming years. The third edition will return to the Ernst & Young Centre in May 2014.
