There were angry exchanges outside the U-S embassy in London on Wednesday as rival Iraqi demonstrators clashed during a protest against sanctions.

Scuffles broke out among some of the one hundred people who gathered to protest sanctions imposed by the United Nations against Iraq following the Gulf War.

The protest was organised by a group calling itself 'Hands Off Iraq'.
Up to 100 people of all ages were there - mainly Iraqis living in Britain but also including British left-wing radicals opposed to 'imperialism'.

The scuffles broke out between rival groups of Iraqis taking part in the protest.

UPSOUND:
No violence please - We are here for peace, we are here for peace.

While most of the demonstrators were not supporters of Saddam, they believed UN sanctions were punishing the people of Iraq.

The people here, they want to demonstrate against the sanctions. There is never ever any country in the world that experienced this kind of sanction"

Others at the protest were clearly lining up behind Saddam in his latest confrontation with the West.

No, Saddam Hussein is not a dictator. Saddam Hussein is the symbol, undisputed, is the symbol of the Iraq people. The dictators are Tony Blair and Clinton.

The demonstration remained mostly peaceful after police moved in to restore calm.
