The full edition of "News 10 at 11," weekend edition, on WTEN (channel 10) in Albany, NY, the area's ABC affiliate. This aired following the 2000 Emmy Awards.
Steve Ammerman is the anchor, Melissa Sander has "Doppler Weather," and John Spadafora has sports. ABC News' Carla Wohl reports from the Emmy's, while sports director Dan Murphy reports from Philadelphia where the Giants took on the Eagles. Scott Dell has the lottery drawing; following that Steve Ammerman reveals that would be the first of several NY Lottery Take 5 drawings WTEN would air on its late night Sunday newscasts.
The big story is on Republican Senator Rick Lazio under fire for a handshake photo with a Palestinian leader. Lazio said "taxpayer money was used" and the photo leak was to boost Hillary Clinton's campaign. With polls showing Lazio's lead over Clinton reducing, he ended up losing the race that November. Also losing a coaching race, Bobby Knight, who had been suspended by the Indiana University athletic department; the university president said Knight had "consistently violated" policies. Well, he had been getting away with it for 29 years. Mike Davis became head coach, and despite being an "interim" the Hoosiers finished the 2000-01 season 21-13.
Other stories: a man crashes into a store in Guilderland (Caruso's Custom Clothier, now a jewelry store). That intersection is just by Crossgates Mall, and they are currently building a Costco Wholesale store nearby, set to open this summer. Also a fight at the Aviation Mall in Queensbury leads to a stabbing, an ongoing search is conducted in Italy at a campground ransacked by floods, a Los Alamos scientist plans to plea guilty and run out his jail sentence, and for Emmy results: Will & Grace won Most Nominated Comedy, Michael J. Fox speaks following his "Best Actor" award and his Parkinson's diagnosis, James Gandolfini also getting "Best Actor" for The Sopranos, and The West Wing and Will & Grace both getting "Best Shows."
Melissa Sander forecasts rain for the work week, after a pleasant Sunday had passed, and in sports the Bob Knight story continues. While they put up the "Miles Brand" L3, the story instead shows students at IU protesting the firing. Dan Murphy has an anomaly (well, today anyway) featuring the Giants beating the Eagles 38-18, at a time where Jim Fassel was head coach and the team began their season 2-0. The Yankees (soon to be World Series bound) also play a great game against the Red Sox 6-2. At the bottom of the screen is the "News 10 InstaSports" ticker featuring high school scores.
You wouldn't know it yet, but changes were on the horizon at News 10, which at that point had spent most of the last decade in third place. Terry McSweeney had just been hired to join the station, and a new set and graphics package were ordered. The set and graphics here had begun to look dated, and with the 21st Century just beginning, it was time for change. The new look premiered on October 9th, coinciding with the new fall TV season, delayed mostly due to the Summer Olympics on NBC.
Steve Ammerman also flubs at the end, not realizing how much time was left. He looks off-camera and says "that's going to do it" twice, and while the show closes the copyright bug does not appear. Maybe they were trying to strip down production while getting the new graphics ready, or the weekend producer was on vacation (or asleep, lol).
The news theme is Primetime News by Non-Stop Music. WTEN kept it when the graphics changed, except it started using the 1999 remixes that originated at KXAS in Dallas (which also originated Primetime News itself, in 1991).
