The Lord of the Ring Mouse: A Tiny Wearable Mouse That Lasts Over a Month on One Charge

Researchers at the University of Tokyo have developed picoRing, an ultralow-power, ring-based wireless mouse that could transform how we interact with technology. Designed for use with augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) devices, this lightweight, 5-gram ring can operate for over a month on a single charge, addressing a major limitation of existing wearable devices.

Unlike traditional smart rings that drain small batteries quickly, picoRing uses just 30–500 microwatts of power. It achieves this through a new communication method called semi-passive inductive telemetry (semi-PIT), which amplifies magnetic signals without needing extra energy. A watch-like wristband acts as a signal relay between the ring and AR glasses, allowing for low-power, long-range operation.

Currently, picoRing can perform simple tasks such as scrolling and clicking, making it ideal for AR environments where traditional mice are impractical. Though still a prototype, researchers aim to make it smaller, more comfortable, and suitable for health monitoring applications by measuring heart rate or stress.

With picoRing, wearable technology takes a major step toward becoming more natural, efficient, and seamlessly integrated into daily life—truly a tiny ring with giant potential.
