There are various ways to find the energy transfer between the system and its surrounding. Calorimeters are not just limited to simple reaction calorimeters but can be extended to bomb calorimeters as well. Sometimes, water is used as the sole medium to measure the heat transfer, whereas other times water is not used at all and you may also encounter a combination of water and the calorimeter. Both have different specific heat capacities that must be accounted for as well.
