After Muslims get through a whole month of fasting, then comes Eid.

Eid is an Arabic word for ‘festival’ or ‘feast’, and there are two main Eids in the Islamic calendar: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

Eid al-Fitr, also referred to as the ‘Smaller Eid’. It is a three-day celebration that marks the end of the month of Ramadan or fasting.

“Eid al-Fitr is an opportunity to celebrate what one has achieved during the month of Ramadan.”

As they embrace Eid, Muslims are also obliged to give charity, known as Zakat al-Fitr, so the poor can celebrate too.

Furthermore, it offers a great opportunity for kids to have fun, make new friends, and get familiar with the culture.

Buying new clothes, especially for children, cleaning homes, and preparing special sweets and dishes are a big part of Eid preparations.

What is Iftar?
Iftar is the name of the meal eaten by Muslims at sunset to break their fast during Ramadan. It is the main meal of the day for those who are fasting.

The other meal of the day for those who are fasting is called Suhoor, which is eaten early in the morning before dawn.

Although Iftar is typically the meal in which Muslims break their fast upon the sun setting, it has much greater significance than this.

Iftar is said to bring blessings, especially for those that make arrangements for Iftar for others. This is widely regarded as an act of kindness that Allah (SWT) favours immensely.

In fact, Allah (SWT) is said to open the gates of forgiveness for anyone that provides fast observers with Iftar. One who provides a fast observer with a glass of water during Iftar will be granted access to Allah’s (SWT) fountain and never experience thirst again.
