👉 Learn how to expand logarithms using the product/quotient rule. The product rule of logarithms states that the logarithm of a product to a given base is equivalent to the sum of the logarithms of the terms that make up the product to the same base. For example: log ab = log a + log b. The quotient rule of logarithms states that the logarithm of the quotient of two numbers to a given base is equivalent to the subtraction of the logarithm of the denominator from the logarithm of the numerator to the same base. For example: log (a/b) = log a - log b.

Thus, when given a logarithm expression involving the logarithm of the product of two or more numbers to a certain base, the logarithm can be expanded by adding the individual logarithms of the terms that make up that product to the same base as the base of the logarithm of the product. And when given a logarithm expression involving the logarithm of the quotient of two numbers to a certain base, the logarithm can be expanded by subtracting the logarithm of the denominator of the quotient from the logarithm of the numerator of the quotient. And when given a logarithm expression involving the logarithm of a number raised to a certain exponent, the logarithm can be expanded by multiplying the exponent to the logarithm of the number without the exponent.

These rules can also be combined together as applicable to expand a given logarithm expression.
