Katharine K. Davis created this song based on a Czech folk tune in 1941, and this setting for handbells reflects an orchestration which includes many percussion instruments. In this setting, Brian includes timpani, snare, sus cymbal, and triangle, although a more extensive percussion score is also available which includes… yes… cowbell! There are many key changes, a fair number of accidentals, and many percussive and other ‘creative’ techniques. The addition of an optional ‘cadence’ which features mallets rhythmically striking several other objects will be a kick for ringers!
He wrote: Brian is being creative here so you better sit down! I've attached performance notes which explain some of the more "out there" sections. The short version is [begins] as a simple processional for bells and percussion. It increases in complexity to highlight 'drums' as the arrangement progresses. There is an optional drum break where all the ringers get to drum four different additive rhythms by themselves first and then with percussion.
Needless to say, this piece will be a fun challenge for advanced groups and audiences will love it!
